With the new WordPress 5 that was released on Dec 7, 2018 came the biggest advancement in years.
just got easier.
If you have ever tried to build a website using previous versions of WordPress then you know what I’m talking about when I say it is not for the weak of heart. In fact many designers have escaped this headache by using page builders such as Elementor, Divi and Beaver Builder.
Gutenberg Editor which is included with WordPress 5 is kinda like a page builder program, by this I mean that it uses blocks like they do to build a page. Blocks can contain anything such as text, images, video, social media icons, etc, etc… with customizable options for each block. Will this render page builders obsolete? Not at all, the fact that WordPress now has it’s own page builder is a huge improvement by all means however it is still very basic in its infancy. It’s options are still very limited but at least it’s a start. However development has already been underway for a while and as such there are already themes and plugins already designed to be compatible and enhance the features of Gutenberg which I have not tested out yet but I hear that they are almost equivalent to commercial page builders.
What will the future of Gutenberg be? Only time will tell but if they keep moving forward and advancing the features then maybe someday it might become the dominant website designer program of the world leaving all other page builders and drag and drop builders in the dust allowing WordPress to corner the website design market.
